The comprehensive list of software for remote sensing, image processing and for use within a GIS are available from a range of companies who provide software on a licence basis, there are also open-source and proprietary software available. These particular programs have a variety of applications and it is important to understand that certain software may be dominant within a particular industry therefore it is important to get familiar with specific software.
According to an NOAA Sponsored Research by Global Marketing Insights, Inc. the most used applications among Western Academic respondents are as follows: ESRI 39%, ERDAS IMAGINE 27%, ITT Visual Information Solutions ENVI 17%, MapInfo 9%, AutoDesk 7%.
