NERC aims to help the UK tackle environmental challenges by investing in research, training and knowledge transfer in the environmental sciences. Earth observation satellites are invaluable tools for environmental scientists helping us to understand the Earth system as a whole. NERC invests around £50m every year on Earth observation. This includes the UK’s subscription to the European Space Agency’s Earth observation programme, working with other space agencies, such as the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA), and funding our own Earth observation centres of excellence. NERC plans to launch the National Centre for Earth Observation in April 2008.
