Support of Landsat Continuity Mission

Eurimage joined the EARSC and EARsel initiative and would like to contribute to promoting the continuity of the Landsat Mission, as one of the main mid resolution missions used in a wide range of applications, especially in agriculture- and forestry monitoring. We are sure that a large number of replies will be of great benefit to show the US Government the strong interest in mid resolution optical data and convince them to continue with these Missions. Whoever would like to contribute is invited to read the request below and complete the online survey developed by ASPRS.

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has enlisted the support of the geospatial community to play a major role in helping to determine the future of the U.S. moderate resolution land imaging program. Recognizing that many users of Landsat exist outside the U.S., and that whatever the U.S. decides to do with a moderate resolution land imaging program in the future will impact a number of international users and applications, we would appreciate your assistance in broadcasting this opportunity for the global community to be heard.

In an effort to assist OSTP in documenting the value and nature of societal benefits derived from moderate resolution land imaging, ASPRS has developed an online survey so that the professional community can provide useful input into the deliberative process. This survey asks for information about past applications of Landsat and other moderate resolution sources, as well as solicits opinions on future systems and policies.

Collectively, ASPRS and OSTP would appreciate your dissemination of this questionnaire as widely as possible. The responses will provide valuable information to support the White House effort to “operationalize” moderate resolution satellite land imaging by the U.S.

If you know of other organizations or colleagues who would be willing to publicize the survey, please feel free to forward this link. Survey results will be published electronically and in a future issue of PE&RS. We expect the survey to be ongoing at least until mid-August.

If you are supportive of this effort, please let us know the approximate number of individuals or organizations to which the survey link is sent. The link may also be published on websites – again it would be helpful to know where that occurs.

Thank you for your assistance in helping us shape the future.

Best regards,
Jim
