THE UK SPACE AGENCY AND ESA
Dr David Williams
Acting Chief Executive, UK Space Agency & Chairman of the ESA Council
Thursday 16 September 2010
No.4 Hamilton Place, London
On 23 March 2010, the new UK Space Agency was launched to replace the British National Space Centre and to bring all UK civil space activities under one single management. The UK Space Agency is responsible for all strategic decisions on the UK civil space programme and provides a clear, single voice for UK space ambitions. Crucially the UK Space Agency will negotiate on the UK’s behalf on international bodies such as the European Space Agency (ESA).
Dr Williams takes over as Chairman of the ESA Council at a critical time in that Agency’s 35 year lifetime. The Ariane launcher and the International Space Station have both reached maturity but the future is unclear for both. ESA is increasingly the space agency of the European Union, complicating the relationship with Member States and with industry, and providing a backdrop to ESA’s increasing involvement in programmes with a security dimension.
Dr Williams will steer the ESA Council as it prepares for the next meeting of ESA’s Ministers in 2012 when decisions with long term implications on these and other issues will be taken.
